Are Trump’s Attacks On The Media Dangerous To The Constitution?

Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) said recently that dictators get started when the  government begins to criticize the media’s coverage of the news, specifically news that isn’t in favor of the government. I agree with him on that account, the media and the government attacking each other is one way that dictators get started and a way that they maintain power. For example, the Russian communist leader Vladimir Lenin criticized the coverage of his government in the news. Now, I don’t think President Trump is trying to consolidate his power over the news media and I’m not saying this is the beginning of the dictatorship, but what I am saying is that criticizing the media is something an autocrat would do and it is something that Trump does.

The news media covers Trump differently than they do other political figures, but that doesn’t mean that they are trying to ‘dethrone’ him. They cover him harshly, and I think that’s fair. Trump is a president who lies compulsively, all the time. And so I ask you readers, if we as Americans can’t trust our president, who can we trust?

The first amendment reads the following.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

The government shall not abridge the freedom of speech or of the press. Now, Donald Trump certainly has not proposed any law that would limit the freedom of the press ,but he has certainly criticized the press for their coverage of him. He is and for a long time has been in a position of power, his words carry weight. When he calls CNN fake news, people listen. People around the world listen. Do we want Theresa May scrolling through her Twitter feed and finding that the President of the United States is calling the media in his country fake news and untrustworthy? I think not.

The FAKE NEWS media (failing , , , , ) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!

He has disgraced American democracy with his hatred of free speech and of facts, he has demonized the media for telling the truth, he has shamed our country. Not even Richard Nixon, after the media ruined his presidency, did he say that. Not ever had a president used such insulting language to describe the news media. Never. When he tweeted that the media is the enemy of the American people, he deleted the Tweet. So you think, okay well maybe the man came to his sense. WRONG, as the Donald would say. He deleted the Tweet only to post another Tweet minutes later that included more networks that were the enemy of the American people. The second he decided to press send, the second he wrote those words, he sealed his fate as president, because you can’t put words back into your mouth.
He is a fool for Tweeting those words, he is an even bigger fool for standing by them. At the White House daily press briefing, press secretary Sean Spicer defended the words of the president, the White House feels no remorse. He feels no shame for using the words of a autocratic, communist leader, he feels no shame for sharing similarities with Vladimir Lenin. He feels no remorse, he knows not what he has done. Donald Trump is willing to defend words that threaten the Constitution, the very foundation of our wonderful and free democracy. Someone needs to stand in front of the White House and yell at him, THE GOVERNMENT SHALL NOT ABRIDGE THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS OR OF SPEECH. An attack on the press is an attack on the Constitution which is an attack on us.
How do congressional Republicans feel? How do politicians who swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and whose party preaches freedom and preaches the Constitution. How do they defend these words? How do they defend these awful, awful words?
How does Mike Pence defend these words?
How does Paul Ryan feel when he reads his president’s Tweets?
Does Reince Priebus shudder when he hears those words?
How do you defend a president who criticizes the rights the constitution gives us, how do you defend a president who insults freedoms the brave men and women of our military fought and risked their lives to defend?
How do they defend that. How could you defend that?
